Having a baby in the house is a wonderful experience. At times, however, the joy is broken by a bad case of colic. Many babies, and parents alike, have experienced the agony of colic in infants. It can easily wear a parent's patience thin, especially if the colic episodes go on for hours at a time. Colic is, after all, defined as a baby that cries for more than three hours a day and which crying lasts for more than three weeks. Is it something that you should be alarmed about, however?
Colic in infants is not something that is necessarily harmful to the child. It is always a good idea, however, to ask your doctor about the colic that your baby is experiencing to see if there may be a more serious underlying cause. Colic, by itself, is not damaging or harmful to the baby at all, as far as anybody knows. Any children that experience this problem grow up without any more difficulties than any child that has not had to deal with this problem. So if the issue is actually colic, there is not really any need for alarm, other than the crying that seems to go on almost nonstop.
Many parents are afraid that the colic is hurting their child because the baby seems to be in pain whenever they are crying. The child that is suffering from colic may turn red in color and clench their hands and pull their feet up into their body as if they were hurting somehow. As far as anybody can tell, however, there is not really any pain associated with colic in infants. They can certainly be a trying time for any parent, however, but it does not last forever. Colic in infants tends to go way after about three months of age.
One of the best things that you can do for yourself if you are experiencing this problem is to get away from it every now and again. Enlist the help of a trusted family member or friend to watch the baby while you get out of the house and do some shopping or just drive around to clear your head. You would be amazed at what an hour to yourself can accomplish.
